Why this is a mixed World Heritage site

Ngorongoro was inscribed by UNESCO in 1979 under four natural criteria, and then in 2010 the boundaries were significantly modified and it was additionally inscribed under cultural criterion four. That makes it a mixed natural and cultural property rather than a wildlife reserve that happens to contain ruins. The reason is what lies west of the crater on the Serengeti plains: an archaeological record of human origins that is among the most important anywhere on earth. Most crater itineraries treat this as a roadside stop between the rim and the Serengeti. It deserves better than that.

Olduvai Gorge and the Leakeys

Olduvai is a deep ravine cut into the eastern Serengeti plain, and the NCAA describes it as the place where Mary and Louis Leakey, over more than thirty years of backbreaking work, unearthed the first well-dated fossils and artefacts of some of our earliest ancestors. The 1959 find of Zinjanthropus — now classified as Paranthropus boisei and dated to around 1.75 million years — is the one that made the gorge famous. Homo habilis followed, along with the stone tools attributed to it from deposits 1.6 to 1.8 million years old, and Homo erectus after that. More than fifty hominins have come out of the sequence.

How long the gorge is depends who you ask

This is a good example of why official sources need cross-checking. UNESCO describes Olduvai as a 14-kilometre-long deep ravine. Britannica gives it as about 48 kilometres long and 90 metres deep. The NCAA, which manages it, says 55 kilometres and 100 metres. These are not small discrepancies. The most likely explanation is that UNESCO's figure describes the main gorge segment while the others include the side branches. Roughly 50 kilometres long and 90 to 100 metres deep is the defensible summary, and any site quoting a single confident number without attribution has not checked.

Laetoli: the oldest walk we have

About 45 kilometres south of Olduvai, on the southern edge of the Serengeti plains, lies the site that may matter more. In 1974 a team led by Mary Leakey found hominid footprints preserved in volcanic ash at Laetoli, with excavations following in 1978 and 1979. The trail is almost 27 metres long and comprises roughly seventy footprint impressions in three distinct tracks, made by upright-walking Australopithecus afarensis. UNESCO and the NCAA agree on the date: 3.6 million years. It is direct physical evidence of bipedal walking more than a million years before the earliest Olduvai hominins.

Fitting them into a crater trip

Olduvai Gorge lies on the road between the crater rim and the Serengeti, roughly 217 kilometres and four and a half hours from Arusha, and there is a museum at the site. That position makes it a natural stop on any itinerary that continues west rather than turning back — which is a further argument for a multi-day safari over a single crater day. Laetoli is more remote and access is more limited; treat seeing the footprints themselves as a specialist ambition rather than a standard inclusion, and check what is currently open with the NCAA before building a day around it.
