Getting to Ngorongoro from Arusha and the Airports

Distances that are actually measured
Published distances for Ngorongoro are unusually unreliable, so the figures above were computed by routing over road network data rather than copied. Two circulating numbers are worth correcting outright. The UNEP-WCMC World Heritage datasheet describes the conservation area as 90 kilometres west of Arusha, which cannot be reconciled with any measurement — the straight-line distance alone is around 133 kilometres. And the airport operator's own description of Kilimanjaro International as 40 kilometres from Arusha does not survive contact with the road, which measures 56.5 kilometres. Free-flow times assume clear roads; the real journey is consistently longer.
The gate is not the crater
A distinction that catches people out when planning a first day: the Loduare Gate is the entrance to the conservation area, not the rim. From the gate it is a further 20.5 kilometres and about half an hour of climbing before you reach the rim, the NCAA headquarters and the descent roads. The NCAA corroborates the distance itself, describing the Simba A public campsite on the rim as at least 19 kilometres from the main entry gate. If you are driving from Arusha and hoping to be on the crater floor the same morning, the arithmetic rarely works — this is why people sleep at Karatu or on the rim.
Which airport, and the one most people miss
Kilimanjaro International is the main international gateway, with a 3,600-metre runway, sitting about 56 kilometres and an hour by road from Arusha. Arusha Airport handles domestic flights only and is roughly 7 kilometres from the city centre. The one that is routinely overlooked is Lake Manyara Airport, which the Tanzania Airports Authority describes explicitly as the connecting airfield for tourists heading to Lake Manyara, Serengeti, Tarangire and Ngorongoro. It sits 36 kilometres and under an hour from the Loduare Gate, against 159 kilometres from Arusha — a saving of most of a day's driving.
Airstrips inside the conservation area
There are two airstrips within the conservation area itself. Ngorongoro Airstrip sits on the crater rim, and the NCAA places the Simba A campsite less than 600 metres from it. Ndutu Airstrip lies out to the west, near the camps on the calving plains. The NCAA's published tariff schedule includes a line for aircraft landing fees, which confirms that aircraft do land inside the area. Treat these as airstrips serving charter and camp transfers rather than as airports — Lake Manyara is the nearby field with scheduled airline service.
Spelling, and one small thing that helps
The NCAA writes the main entrance as Loduare, not Lodoare, and uses that spelling consistently across its own accommodation and geopark pages. You will see both forms in booking confirmations and on signage, and they are the same gate. Similarly, Olduvai and Oldupai both appear in official use for the gorge, with Oldupai being the corrected Maasai form; the NCAA's own site uses Olduvai. Neither variation will cause you a problem, but knowing they are the same place saves a confusing moment when your itinerary and your driver use different spellings.
